Cost as an Independent Variable (CAIV) Analysis Services

Cost as an Independent Variable (CAIV) is a concept which addresses affordability that has been around since the mid 90s.

The UMI Team successfully implemented the CAIV Program and processes on the Army's Crusader Program. The Crusader was one of two Army Flagship Programs for the implementation of CAIV Programs. The Crusader Program contributed to an overall reduction in program costs of hundreds of million of dollars. The Crusader Program won the Army's "Best CAIV Program" in 1998, and UMI was given an "Outstanding Supplier" award by the Prime Contractor in the same year.

Cost trade studies are at the heart of the CAIV process to achieve the "best economic value." Cost trade studies involve analysis of performance, cost, schedule, safety and other relevant parameters to evaluate their impact on the program to enable Program Managers to decide which configurations provide the "most bang for the buck."
