Alcohol and Other Drugs

Course Description

This course is designed to help counselors who are working with substance abusers and DUI clients exposed to alcohol and other drugs through identifying, clarifying, and changing family roles and rules associated with substance abuse; addressing risk factors associated with substance abuse; and finding available, accessible, and effective treatment programs for the substance abuser; and working with the DUI/DWI offender.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this training session, participants will be able to:

• Recall the various effects of drugs on the body.
• Define use, abuse, and addiction.
• Describe the Disease Model of Substance Abuse.
• List the different stages in disease progression.
• Recognize the CDC's Epidemiology Model of Substance Abuse.
• Define culturally competent and discuss issues counselors encounter with culturally diverse families.
• Define family systems.
• Discuss family dynamics in AOD systems - rules, roles, and codependency.
• Discuss resistance and identify specific techniques for managing it.
• Examine family system dynamics in a case scenario.
• Identify basic treatment protocol.
• Describe the Minnesota Model.
• Identify standard treatment modalities and barriers to treatment.
• Discuss the treatment Modalities for the Chronic Drunk Driver

Suggested Course Length

This is a two day course which will fulfill the minimum requirement for most governing bodies.
