7th Generation Community Services Corporation Seeks VISTA Volunteers
7th Generation Community Services Corporation (7th Generation) is a nonprofit organization founded by UMI's President and Executive Vice President, Ken and Pat Barnes, who now desire to use their expertise and experience helping Native American communities and individuals with their economic growth and expansion opportunities. 7th Generation's philosophy, which is based on the traditional belief (of many tribes) that everything we do or say will continue to have an effect for seven generations, is reflected in our mission to work collaboratively with Native Americans to achieve their self-determined goals for economic and community growth.
To meet this mission 7th Generation works in collaboration with Native American tribes and organizations to increase opportunities for Personal Professional Development and Community Development. We hope to create a continuum of services that considers the range of individual capabilities and specific needs of the tribes we are working with. There are 562 federally recognized Indian tribes and Alaskan Native entities with a total tribal enrollment of over 1,800,000 in the United States today. This group, according to U.S. Census data, makes up the largest ethnic group living at the bottom of our nation's economic ladder. AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is a fulltime, national service program for men and women ages 18 and older interested in VISTA's goal of bringing low income people out of poverty. The volunteers or members serve in nonprofit organizations to develop permanent infrastructures to strengthen their programs and expand services to residents in disadvantaged communities. In return for their service, VISTA members receive a modest living allowance ($10,080.00 per year), health coverage, training, student loan forbearance and relocation expenses. Upon completion of service, they can choose an education award of $4,725 or a $1,200 cash stipend. They also receive noncompetitive eligibility for federal employment. We are currently seeking one VISTA member to work with the development and implementation of our Apprenticeship program, the goal of which is to create opportunities for Native Americans for entry into trades or technical and professional occupations. The full job responsibilities and qualifications are available on the 7th Generation website at www.7thGeneration.org. For more information about AmeriCorps and VISTA please visit their websites at www.americorps.org or www.friendsofvista.org.
